Ten thousand million tongues
Uttering, stuttering, muttering,
Cluttering up the sweet air I once breathed.
Cat When
She never caught a bird When the Earth trembles
She never hurt a fly I shall be aware.
Just the occasional spider When a star twinkles
Sometimes caught her eye. I shall sit and stare.
She never caught a mouse When oblivion takes me
She never hurt a shrew I shall not care.
Just the occasional spider For in Earth and in Heaven
That came into her view. I have been there.
She never caught a mole
She never hurt my hand
Just the occasional spider
Upon it she would land.
She caught a rare disease
She caught it in the morn’.
Just the occasional spider
Rejoices now she’s gorn.
This next poem was written when the World was under threat from
atomic weapons during the cold war..........
Atomic Bomb.
Fire ball, dire ball
Of death.
Slowly creeping, silently seeping
Life.
Gangrene green
And rudderly red
With bones and blood
From humans bled.
Churning the clouds
Burning the crowds
Of birds under its sun.
Alpha, Gamma, Beta,
Modern Gods of the dead,
Who did conquer God of Mars
With his sword and crudities.
Now they float in ray like nudities
These Gods of the stars’
Hot fiery blood.
Alpha, Gamma, Beta,
Giants of the Geiger Meter
In this fire ball, dire ball
Of death.
The Karkle
If a lens can bend light
Could I devise in optics
A clever glass to sparkle?
Call it a name, say a Karkle
And use this dazzling optic
To bend a ray of love
From her shining eyes
Into my own.
So with my clever Karkle
I shall see at last, the sparkle
Of her love.
So Minimal?
It was only a cat they say
Not a dog nor a grey.
It was only a feline thing
Not a monkey nor a bird to sing
It was only a small furry animal.
So minimal.
It was only a cat they say
Not a cuddly bear nor dray
It was only a small ball of fur
Not a Hippo or Dinosaur.
It was only a small furry animal.
So minimal.
It was only a cat they say
Not an Eagle or dark Bay
It was only Tiddles, Puss or such
Not a man or child with common touch
It was only a small furry animal.
So minimal.
It was only my old cat
Not my Aunt or sister’s brat.
It was only my old pal
Not my Uncle or brother’s gal.
It was only a small furry animal
Who passed away.
So minimal,
So minimal ?
